Tenure Track faculty position in in the area of Business Markets and Marketing at The Department of Marketing and Strategy

Department of Marketing and Strategy

The Department of Marketing and Strategy at the Stockholm School of Economics invites applications for a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level in the area of business markets and marketing.

We are looking for candidates with a Ph.D. in Business Administration (primarily Marketing, but also other BA subdisciplines) or in another relevant discipline. The doctoral degree must be completed before taking up the position. For this position, we are specifically looking for candidates with an interest in and documented experience from research on business markets and business market dynamics, including market formation and transformation, and the role of various stakeholders in such processes. The successful candidate is expected to actively participate in one or more of the ongoing research streams at the department (see below).

The successful candidate will be part of the core faculty in Marketing. Teaching tasks fall within marketing at large, but with a focus on business markets and marketing (at bachelor, master and executive levels, with English as instruction language). Research and teaching are equally important in the position and the candidate will be offered support and training in pedagogy. The standard teaching load for tenure track faculty at SSE is the equivalent of four courses per year with the possibility of a 50% reduction through external research grants. The candidate is expected to engage in collaboration with external stakeholders in both research and teaching, tapping into the wide network of partner organizations at the Stockholm School of Economics.

To summarize, we are looking for a colleague with a passion for both research and teaching, who is doing outstanding research, have a track record of high-quality teaching, and come with excellent recommendations. Beyond this, we are looking for someone prepared to contribute to our research environment, our education programs, and other areas in the life of a thriving academic institution.

The expected start date for the position is January 1, 2021, but we are open to discussing alternative start dates. Salaries are competitive, commensurate with qualifications and experience, and are set on an individual basis. The tenure track period is 6 years conditional on successful mid-term review after 3 years. Tenure evaluation takes place after a maximum of 6 years, and successful evaluation leads to conversion of the tenure-track position into a tenured Associate Professor position.

Requirements The position requires a PhD in marketing or another relevant discipline, for instance, strategic management, organization studies, or economic sociology. Candidates must have completed their PhD prior to taking up the position. Candidates must demonstrate a strong research interest in business markets and marketing, and a commitment to high quality research and teaching. Preference will be given to candidates who have published in top journals relevant for business markets and marketing, have a proven track record of international peer-reviewed publication, or a strong pipeline of submitted papers. Candidates should have an active presence in the international research community in the field. Reviewing experience from relevant journals is a merit.

The candidates should have documented experience from teaching relevant courses and must demonstrate teaching effectiveness as indicated by teaching evaluations, letters of recommendations and/or peer reviews. Experience from teaching at both bachelor and master level, designing courses, coaching student projects, teaching in executive education, and ability to teach in adjacent areas (e.g., consumer, international, and strategic marketing) are all considered merits.

Finally, candidates should demonstrate an ability and willingness to undertake administrative duties and play a full part in the intellectual life of the department and school at large.

About the Department of Marketing and Strategy The department is one of 6 academic departments at the Stockholm School of Economics. The current faculty consists of 9 full professors, 6 associate professors, and 5 assistant professors/lecturers. At present, the department has a cohort of 24 PhD students enrolled in the PhD program in Business Administration. The department also hosts about 35 research fellows and post docs funded by external research grants. The department faculty and research fellows contribute to teaching in marketing, strategy, and sustainable business in the bachelor, master, PhD, EMBA and executive education programs at the Stockholm School of Economics.

Research at the department covers several disciplines within Business Administration (Marketing, International Business, Strategic Management, etc.) as well as economic psychology, economic sociology, and economic geography. A variety of theoretical perspectives and research methodologies are thus employed. Irrespective of discipline, the department has a high-performance research culture. Faculty members are expected to be active researchers and regularly publish in top journals within their respective fields. Our tenure evaluations reflect this and rely, among other things, on the AJG and FT50 lists as indicators of research quality. Besides publishing, our faculty members also actively and successfully apply for external research grants to fund both their own research and PhD and post doc projects.

The department has recently launched a new significant research initiative focused on contemporary strategic efforts to shape markets and marketing, and their societal consequences. At the most general level, the initiative concerns the future of market society and consists of three complementary research programs: (1) Exploring the platform economy: platform giants and the market society they build; (2) Understanding transformations in market ecosystems: strategies for a digital and sustainable world; and (3) Shaping the future of marketing: strategic marketing in the age of influencers, nudges and algorithms. The successful candidate is expected to link her/his research to and thus contribute to one or more of these research programs.
